3-Axis vs 4-Axis vs 5-Axis CNC: Which Do You Need?
A no-nonsense guide to CNC axis configurations. When to use 3-axis, when you need 4 or 5, and how to avoid paying for capability you don't need.
This is one of the most common questions I get from engineers who don't work in machine shops every day. The answer is simpler than most people think.
3-axis CNC is your workhorse. The cutter moves in X, Y, and Z. The workpiece stays put. Best for: prismatic parts — brackets, plates, enclosures, blocks. Simple to program, fast cycle times, lowest cost per hour. If your part fits in a vice and has no undercuts, 3-axis is probably all you need.
4-axis adds rotation around one axis (usually the table rotates). This lets you machine multiple faces without resetting the part. Best for: cylindrical parts, parts with features on multiple sides, indexed drilling around a diameter. The sweet spot is parts that would need 3+ setups on a 3-axis machine.
5-axis adds two rotational axes. The tool can approach the part from any angle. Best for: complex sculptured surfaces (turbine blades, impellers, medical implants), deep cavities, parts with extreme draft angles. Single setup means tighter overall accuracy because there's no error stack from multiple clampings.
The honest answer for most parts: 3-axis is sufficient. 5-axis is only justified when geometry demands it or when eliminating setups saves enough time to offset the higher machine rate.
