CNC Machining Lead Times: What to Expect
Realistic lead time expectations for CNC machined parts. From prototype to production, and what factors affect delivery schedules.
Everyone wants their parts yesterday. But CNC machining lead times aren't random — they follow a predictable pattern once you understand what happens between pressing "submit" and getting parts on your desk.
Here's what a typical timeline looks like for a straightforward CNC machining job:
Day 1–2: You send us CAD files. An engineer reviews them for manufacturability. If there are issues or cost-saving opportunities, we flag them before quoting.
Day 2–3: Quote prepared and sent. For standard materials and tolerances, this is usually same-day. Complex 5-axis work or exotic materials may need an extra day.
Day 3–10: Material ordered, CAM programmed, tooling set up, first article machined and inspected. First article inspection report issued with CMM data.
Day 10–14: Production runs, in-process inspection, final CMM report. Parts are packaged and shipped.
So for standard CNC work, expect 2 weeks from CAD to delivery. Rush orders (add 30-50% premium) can hit 5-7 business days. Production runs over 500 pieces add 1-2 weeks depending on volume.
The biggest lead time killers: non-standard materials that need to be ordered from a mill, complex setups requiring custom fixturing, and tight tolerances that slow down feeds and require extra inspection passes.

What actually moves the lead time needle
Material stock is the first gate. 6061-T6 and 304 stainless sit on the shelf in every shape we use; titanium, Inconel, 17-4PH and PEEK usually do not. When we quote a part in an exotic grade we confirm stock before promising a date — a two-week material buy adds two weeks to the calendar and there is no way around it.
The second gate is the machine queue. A simple milled bracket competes with everything else on the floor. Our scheduling rule is simple: prototype jobs jump the queue, production jobs run in waves. That is why a one-off part can sometimes ship faster than a repeat order of the same geometry.
Where time goes after machining
Finishing is where lead-time promises usually break. Anodizing is a batch process — a week is normal even for a small lot, because the shop runs full tanks. Passivation and electropolishing are faster but still days. Plating is the slowest: colour anodize with a specific RAL shade can add ten days because the batch waits for the right dye load.
Inspection rarely drives the calendar unless the drawing demands full CMM on every feature. A standard FAIR on a first article is a day of CMM time. What we see customers underestimate is the paperwork end: a proper AS9102 package, material certs to EN 10204 3.1 and a CoC take a day of engineering time to assemble. Plan for it.
