Prototype vs Production CNC Machining
When to prototype, when to go to production, and how to make the transition smooth. Key differences in setup, cost, and quality approach.
A prototype part and a production part might look identical, but the way they're made is usually different. The difference isn't about quality — it's about setup investment and process maturity.
Prototype machining means flexibility. We use standard tooling, generic CAM strategies, and manual setups. If you change the design after the first batch, no problem — we adjust the program and go again. Per-part cost is higher because setup time is amortized over a small quantity.
Production machining means efficiency. We invest in dedicated fixturing, optimized toolpaths, and process validation (FMEA, control plan, SPC). Per-part cost drops because setup cost is spread over thousands of parts, but you don't want to change the design once production tooling is cut.
The transition point varies, but generally: 1-50 pieces = prototype pricing, 100-500 pieces = bridge production (mixed approach), 500+ pieces = full production with dedicated tooling and PPAP documentation.
We often see customers start with prototype quantities, validate the design, then order production quantities once the design is locked. That's the smart approach — don't invest in production tooling until you're confident in the design.
