Understanding AS9100D: Aerospace Quality Management Explained

What the standard really requires, what the audit checks, and the three questions that sort real systems from certificates on the wall.

What AS9100D actually is — and is not

AS9100D is the aerospace quality standard built on ISO 9001:2015, published by SAE International. It adds aerospace-specific requirements: configuration management, first-article inspection per AS9102, risk management in design, traceability of special processes, and control of critical items. It is not a certification of engineering capability — it is a certification that a quality management system controls how work is planned, measured and documented.

The practical consequence for a buyer: an AS9100D-certified shop can prove, for every part, who did what, what it was measured against, and what evidence exists. When a drawing carries a note like "certification per AS9102 required", the shop's CMM program, material certs and paperwork are part of the deliverable — not an afterthought.

What the audit actually checks

Certification bodies (PRI, Bureau Veritas, TÜV) audit against the standard plus your own quality manual. The auditor walks the floor and asks: show me the CMM program for this part, the calibration records for that probe, the training record for this machinist, the nonconformance log for last quarter. The certification is only as strong as those records. That is why our inspection reports, calibration traceability and material certs are part of the standard package, not an upsell.

Renewal is not a rubber stamp. Surveillance audits happen annually; the certificate is re-issued on a cycle. A shop that "has AS9100D" but cannot show current surveillance records is telling you more than they intend. Ask for the certificate number and check it against the registrar's public list.

What it means for your parts

For a buyer, the standard translates into three concrete deliverables. First-article inspection reports per AS9102 with the measurement strategy documented. Material traceability back to the mill certificate — lot numbers, heat numbers, not "we bought it from a distributor". And special-process control: anodizing, passivation, heat treatment and NDT all have defined, qualified processes with records.

It also means change control. If the shop changes a supplier for your material, the drawing or the process, the configuration-management requirement forces the change through review. That is annoying for us and protective for you — the part you approved is the part you keep getting.

Questions to ask a certified supplier

Three questions sort a real AS9100D system from a certificate on the wall. Who is the registrar and when was the last surveillance audit? What happens when a CMM report shows an out-of-tolerance feature — is there a documented nonconformance process with a record you can see? And can you issue an AS9102 first-article report with the measurement strategy, not just the numbers?
