Why Japanese engineering teams buy machined parts from Xi’an
For a design office in Nagoya or Osaka the arithmetic is straightforward: a turned part in SUS304 that costs ¥4,500–¥7,500 from a domestic job shop lands at ¥1,800–¥3,200 from us, freight and duty included. On prototype runs the gap is smaller but still real; on production runs above 500 pieces we are talking 40–55% total landed-cost savings. That is why machine builders in Aichi and automation suppliers in Osaka now send drawings to Xi’an.
Price is only half of it. The other half is whether the supplier holds the tolerance, ships the paperwork, and answers a technical question at 11 p.m. Japan time. We built the shop around that: 40+ CNC machines, in-house CMM with NIST-traceable calibration, and engineers who answer RFQs with a DFM note, not a price list.
Tolerances, JIS standards and drawing practice
Japanese drawing packages typically come with JIS B 0405 general tolerances, GD&T per JIS B 0021 (ISO 1101), and surface symbols per JIS B 0601. We read these daily. Our standard machining tolerance is ±0.05 mm; on critical features we hold ±0.01 mm routinely, and ±0.005 mm on diameters after grinding.
The CMM program is only as good as its alignment to the drawing. We measure per ISO 1101 interpretation — datums first, then derived features. Every production order ships with an inspection report, material certificate and certificate of conformity. Full FAIR per AS9102 on request for aerospace work.
Materials actually ordered from Japan
Japanese orders in our book skew toward: SUS304 and SUS316 for general industry and food equipment, A5052 and A7075 aluminium for automation and moulding, SCM440 for shafts and gears, and 17-4PH and Inconel 718 for energy and aerospace. Special grades are no problem — send the JIS designation and we confirm stock and lead time before quoting.
Surface finishes: as-machined Ra 1.6, Ra 0.8 for sealing faces, black anodize for aluminium, passivation for stainless in food and medical use. If a drawing calls for a finish we cannot guarantee, we say so before the quote.
Lead times, customs and time zones
Xi’an is one hour behind Tokyo. Send a drawing on Friday afternoon Japan time and our engineering team picks it up Monday morning — your Monday. Prototypes in aluminium and stainless in 10–15 working days, production in 3–5 weeks, then 3–5 days by DHL Express to your door, customs handled.
We quote EXW or FOB Xi’an, and DDP is available — the buyer sees the full price before ordering. Payment by T/T, PayPal or L/C; invoices in JPY, USD or EUR; proforma invoice for first orders. Project managers answer around the clock and schedule calls to overlap with Japanese business hours.
